Acrylic Building Model Production Case

This case study is based on the acrylic model of the double layered octagonal pavilion shown in the picture. From the perspective of material innovation and technological breakthroughs, the customized production process of the fully transparent ancient architectural model is dismantled, providing a unique visual carrier for cultural display and artistic installations.

1、 Core demands of the project

The project prototype is a traditional double-layer double eaved octagonal pavilion, made of fully transparent acrylic material, aiming to restore the lightweight structure and ethereal atmosphere of ancient architecture with modern materials. The model is made at a scale of 1:20, with the core requirement of fully presenting the mortise and tenon logic, eaves, and corridor railings of the pavilion through the transparency of acrylic, while meeting the lightweight and structural stability requirements of indoor hanging displays.

2、 Core manufacturing processes and procedures

1. Structural disassembly and substrate forming

Based on the construction method of ancient architecture, combined with the characteristics of acrylic materials, structural optimization is carried out: the pavilion is disassembled into four modules: platform, column grid, beam and beam, and roof. The dimensions and stress points of each component are accurately calculated through CAD modeling. The platform is made of thickened acrylic sheet laser cut and shaped, with polished edges to ensure both load-bearing strength and overall transparency; The column grid and beam beams are spliced with thin acrylic rods and plates, simulating the traditional mortise and tenon structure. Seamless connection between components is achieved through hot bending and bonding, ensuring mechanical stability.

2. Fine tuned production of roofs and eaves

The double eaved gable top is the visual core of this model: both the upper and lower roofs are made of acrylic sheet hot bending technology, cut piece by piece and hand spliced to restore the dynamic curves of the tile ridges and flying eaves; The ridge and roof are made of 3D printed transparent resin components, which are polished and bonded to the acrylic roof, accurately restoring the details of traditional architectural ridge decoration. The arch of wooden architecture under the eaves is carved and assembled with miniature acrylic bars. The layered structure is clearly visible under the transparent materials, which intuitively shows the mechanical aesthetics of ancient buildings.

3. Polishing of facade and decorative details

The corridor railings are made of laser cut acrylic strips spliced together, finely replicating the shape of treasure bottle columns and search rods, with rounded edges to avoid sharpness; The door and window grilles are cross bonded with extremely fine acrylic strips, simulating traditional floral window patterns. The transparent material allows the internal spatial hierarchy to be fully presented. All adhesive parts are made of specialized acrylic glue to ensure that there are no bubbles or marks at the joints. At the same time, cutting marks are eliminated through polishing technology, making the overall texture more warm and transparent.

4. Suspension structure and scene adaptation

Considering the indoor hanging display requirements, a hidden metal hanging point is designed at the top of the model, which is connected to the ceiling through high-strength steel wire to ensure load-bearing safety and not damage the integrity of the building appearance. The temporary support structure at the bottom will be removed after installation, creating a visual effect of the pavilion floating in the air. To adapt to the lighting of the exhibition hall, the model did not add additional lighting, relying on the transparency of acrylic itself to interact with ambient light, reflecting dynamic light and shadow at different angles, enhancing the ethereal atmosphere.

3、 Quality Control and Application Value

Establish a three-level quality inspection system of "material testing component trial assembly finished product debugging": carry out acrylic hot bending and bonding strength testing in the early stage to ensure the feasibility of the process; Mid term verification of component dimensions and splicing accuracy, with errors controlled within 0.3mm; Conduct suspension load-bearing tests and wind stability tests in the later stage to ensure long-term display safety. The finished model has been applied to cultural exhibition halls, and with its fully transparent materials and precise craftsmanship, it has become a model for the integration of traditional architectural culture and modern design aesthetics. It not only allows viewers to intuitively experience the structural wisdom of ancient architecture, but also provides an innovative idea of "transparent narrative" for architectural model creation.
